((This is more of a story, so don't bother reading through it if you don't want to. ))
Momimi leaned against a wall in the alley, her eyes, for the moment, staring fixedly at the bricks ahead of her. She had her arms crossed and she appeared to be deep in thought. Ace never remembered her little daydreams, or what it was that was running through her head at the time. All she knew was that it tended to make her frown, and she always stood as still as a statue when her mind was like this.
In the alleyway, there weren't many things. A few rats lay huddled in the darkest corner, and a dumpster or two along the opposite wall to Ace. The Alley was an entrance for some people into their home. Usually however, it was just used to get to the dumpsters with more ease, but for others it was to be safe. Some people didn't trust being seen enter their house. People like Josephine Grerne.
From a distance one could tell Josephine, for 30, had a very pretty, round face and coarse black hair that frizzed to her shoulders. Ace never really cared about people or what they looked like, but she turned when the woman entered the alley, as she seemed to be on the complete edge. She gave off such an air of fear that even Ace wanted to ask her what was up.
She glanced at Ace as she passed, but was far too interested in her own front door and finding the keys, which she knew must be dug somewhere deep inside her pocket. Josephine continuously was glancing behind her.
"Uh... Lady, Is there a fucking chupacabra or something behind you?" Ace joked, trying to make the situation more lighthearted really. She didn't like intense situations unless they were in her favor. Josephine's hands were shaking as she pulled them out of her pocket, her door key hanging from her finger on a key ring.
She gave the most nervous laugh imaginable and tried to take a deep breath. This was all she could muster in response to Ace's somewhat insulting jests. "Worse." She said seriously.
Ace tilted her head and walked towards her calmly, "Need any help?" She offered with a raised eyebrow. Josephine's trembling hands didn't seem able to turn the key in the lock. She didn't know what to say...
The bewilderment on Josephine's face was taken as 'yes' by Ace, who then proceeded to take the key herself and twist it quickly in it's lock. With a small 'click', she opened the door and gestured for the home-owner to go inside.
Josephine gave a look at Ace which seemed to convey gratitude. She didn't shut the door, but stood there for a half a second. "Come in, I'll make you tea." She said finally, with a tone of urgency. A figure turned into the path.
Ace gave a small smile, "Mkay." She said, and strolled through the doorway. Josephine spotted the figure and cursed, attempting to lock the door behind her. "Jesus, just let me do it." Ace said harshly, grabbing the keys and turning them herself. Josephine grumbled about the rudeness, but had more important things on her mind.
"Hold on one second." She said to Ace, and promptly went rushing around the house, making sure everything was locked up tight. She then returned. Up close, Ace could see just how red Josephine's cheeks were.
Josephine was trying to calm herself down. "Oh yes, Right, Tea." She mumbled and led Ace towards the kitchen. It wasn't a high level standard of living, as it was fairly close to the slums. However, Ace was still amazed at how furnished and decorated the place was. There were cabinets and drawers, and little hand-made paintings and everything on the walls. Old wood tables that were actually clean, and a floor that didn't suffer from dry-rot. To Ace, This was a palace.
The china teacups that Josephine then placed on the table were simple, but of nice quality. Jo attempted to flatten out her hair and set to work boiling the kettle. All this started to make Ace feel a bit bad. "Um... I don't know if your in the right state of mind to be messing with boiling stuff..." She said, getting off her seat. "You really don't need to be going through this trouble. You don't know me, I could be like some sort of psycho or something."
"I need someone with powers right now. . . I know that you probably won't care, and I'm sure you have better things to do..." Josephine looked at the floor, quite humble really. "But maybe you might consider staying, for just a little while... until he goes away"
Ace had seen cases before in her day. She'd always been quite alert of all the various activities bad neighborhoods and their inhabitants go through. Her expression softened a bit from before. She didn't know why, but she was actually quite concerned with this girl. "How do you know I have powers?... Well, I guess I wouldn't mind staying... for a little while..." Even her tone was softer for some reason. Although, it still had a bit of an attitude to it the off note.
Josephine reached for the handle of the pot as it came to a boil, but Ace got there first. "Is it too personal a question to ask who's following you?"
Surprised, Jo went to where she kept the teabags and put one into each cup. Ace handled the boiling water. Jo hesitated before answering, "...I know you have a power because I can sense people's powers, that's all. I don't consider it a power itself really, as it's useless for defense... Which is why I need someone like you..." She paused for another minute and took a sip of the newly brewed black tea. "And, well... I'd rather not say."
Jo was embarrassed and ashamed by who it was. A goon of her drug dealer. She owed him money. She didn't know where to get it. A shudder ran down her back. There must be something she could do to stop him.
Ace watched the woman's face go from relief straight into that fear and anxiety that she had witnessed earlier.
She felt Compelled to help her. "My name's Ace." She said, holding out her hand to shake. Jo took it and gave a short sigh, "Josephine." She greeted.
